An Auburn police officer who was shot and killed early Sunday morning has been identified.
Police are investigating the circumstances regarding the shooting on Rochdale Street.
Police said the shooting took place during a traffic
stop at 12:30 a.m. Officer Ronald Tarentino pulled over a vehicle and during the stop, Tarentino was shot multiple times in the chest. The shooter fled the scene in a vehicle, according to state police.
A resident told Newscenter 5 he heard the shooting unfold. "I didn't see anything, but I heard rapid fire," the resident said. "Initially I thought it was fireworks."
Tarentino was taken to UMass Medical Center in Worcester where he was pronounced dead. He joined the Auburn police department in May of 2014 after Tarentino was 42 years old and is survived by his wife and three children.
"The Auburn police, the town of Auburn, and the law enforcement community have suffered a tragic loss this morning," said Auburn police chief Andrew Sluckis Jr.
State police escorted the body of the fallen officer to the medical examiner's office in Boston. Members of numerous fire and police departments offered salutes to the procession as it went down the Mass Pike and arrived in Boston.
Auburn and state police are working the scene together. A manhunt is underway for the shooter at this time.
Investigators have not named the suspect in the shooting.
