Djokovic wins comfortably on return from injury to give Serbia Davis Cup lead
Novak Djokovic looked back to his assured self on his return from an elbow injury as he put Serbia 1-0 up against Spain in their Davis Cup quarter-final.
The world No. 2 missed the Miami Open with the issue but showed no signs of trouble as he cruised past Albert Ramos Vinolas 6-3 6-4 6-2 in the
opening rubber.
Djokovic is now on a 12-match winning streak in Davis Cup singles matches and the 29-year-old Spaniard never looked like ending that run.
The 12-time Grand Slam champion had spoken of finding ‘positive energy’ from the tie in Belgrade after making a poor start to the season by his lofty standards.
After winning the Qatar Open in his first event of 2017, Djokovic has not gone beyond the quarter-finals in any of the tournaments he’s played, including a shock second-round Australian Open exit at the hands of Denis Istomin.
But there were no shocks here and the 29-year-old gave Serbia a 1-0 lead against the world No. 24.
Next up Viktor Troicki takes on Pablo Carreno Busta before the doubles on Saturday.
