About 470 houses were destroyed and no fewer than 40 people injured by rainstorm at Mayama Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
Daily Sun gathered that the first rain in the state, which started on
Sunday night, damaged water systems in the area and also, destroyed
electrical poles.
It was learnt that school buildings were also not spared, while homeless people took refuge among relatives.
Speaking with newsmen on telephone, Sole Administrator of Mayama Local
Government, Alhaji Sambawa described the incident as “terrible” and
noted that residents of Sabo Gari area were seriously affected. Sambawa
stressed that there is urgent need for government to provide temporary
accommodation for those of them that were homeless.
Director of Social Development in the area, Salihu Mohammed, who
confirmed the incident in Birnin Kebbi, said many residents, including
primary and secondary schools pupils, whose schools were destroyed, have
been forced to seek refuge elsewhere.
Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu who returned to the state after the May
Day celebration visited the community to sympathise with the victims.
Bagudu, who donated N5 million to the displaced victims, ordered the
state Ministry of works and Water Resources to restore electricity and
provide them with potable water.
