England Under-21s have defeated France 2-1 to lift the 2016 Toulon Cup.
Goals from Chelsea duo Lewis Baker and Ruben Loftus-Cheek gave Gareth Southgate’s side a 2-0 lead at half-time and after a late goal from Dialo, England
managed to fend off late pressure from the French to claim the title for the first time in 22 years.
In the wake of Euro 2016 next month, England’s Under-21’s have sent a message to Roy Hogson’s senior side by remaining unbeaten to claim silverware in Toulon for the first time since 1994.
Southgate’s team of young Englishman started the game in confident fashion, Chelsea midfielder Lewis Baker raced through in the ninth minute to head the Three Lions into the lead. The goal was Baker’s fourth of the tournament and enough to claim the Golden Boot.
England’s dominance didn’t end their. Baker’s Chelsea colleague Ruben Loftus-Cheek finished off a fine team move with another midfield bust to chip the onrushing goalkeeper, his third of the tournament after bagging a brace against Paraguay.
England, who topped Group B by beating Portugal, Paraguay, Japan and Guinea, only conceded one goal which came during a 7-1 victory over Guinea.
